i like Richard
why he is so awesome
a lot of fellow evangelicals think that gay marriage is the moral issue of our time.
it is.
at the holocaust memorial museum in D.C., a visitor walks through the entire experience - from the rise of hitler to the anti-Jew propaganda campaigns to the systematic removal of rights to the solitary attacks to the coordinated holocaust. i remember feeling a lump in my throat as i read through the propaganda campaigns. they seem innocuous at first; in fact, they almost make sense. propaganda is always tied to a very powerful ethics code, and requires a commitment to a cause. it scares people into binary thinking. either you're right or you're wrong.
for folks scared that extending marriage rights to all lucid adults is going to crumble the kingdom of God: God ain't that weak. in fact, he is so powerful and unafraid that he extends to us more than we can always handle, including free will. we're all broken individuals and thus, all our unions reflect our brokenness. God offers us lifelong companionship despite this. if depravity is the reason marriage should be banned, no person or relationship is deserving. not the majority; not the minorities.
a couple i know addressed the folks at their wedding ceremony right before walking down the aisle. they said (paraphrase): "while this meant to be a happy occasion for us, we are also sad today. we know there are those among us here who cannot do what we're about to do. to you, we dedicate our ceremony and hope for the day we can witness yours." i respect that they shared their day of commitment with friends who didn't have a choice. my friend who is gay said he started crying; so did our other friends (a same-sex couple).
off this soapbox onto another: global warming and the systematic rape of the Earth is not a significant moral issue???
